The first heat would be a disaster  as 11e Peter Dickson spins in front of the oncoming pack in what would result in a four car pile up with the 811c Roger Nees being a innocent casualty of the meelee.

34t Cromwell racer Ray Stewart lines up as one of the top 8 highest qualifiers for the pole shuffle where 8th and 7th placegetters race each other over two laps with the winner remaining on track to be joined by the next highest placegetter and the process is repeated. The loser retires to the infield with their point of exit determining what grid they start in the final. if the 8th place car keeps winning they can progress from a eighth grid to a pole (1st) position for the 30 lap final.
